It’s officially that time of year again… 🌿

Fleas and ticks are already out in full force this season, and the more time your pets spend outdoors — whether with you or with Walks & Wags with Morgan — the greater the chance they may pick them up. We want to remind you how important it is to keep your pets protected during the warmer months!

Fleas can live as long as 12 months and can produce millions of offspring during their lifespan. Excessive scratching and hair loss are the two most common signs of fleas. Fleas like to hide in dark, moist, shady areas, so keeping the outside of your home free of debris like grass clippings and leaves can help reduce exposure.

Ticks feed on blood and can plague our dogs and cats without being noticeable to us or to them. They are typically found in tall brush or grass, where they attach to dogs and outdoor cats — or they can be brought inside by pets. Ticks usually attach near the head, neck, or ears, but they can be found anywhere on a pet’s body. Though ticks don’t always cause obvious discomfort, you should regularly check your pet, especially if they spend time outdoors.

Possible complications from a tick bite include:
• Blood loss
• Anemia
• Tick paralysis
• Skin irritation or infection
Lyme disease
Cytauxzoonosis

Just last week, I found two ticks on a client’s dog and one on my own dog after a super-quick potty break. I even had a tick in my own hair after going on a Field Trip with a client’s dog on a local trail! 😳

Check out this article from the ASPCA for more detailed information on fleas and ticks, including how to safely remove ticks from your pets.

You can also help reduce exposure by mowing your lawn regularly, removing tall weeds, and making your yard less attractive to rodents by keeping garbage covered and inaccessible.

Be sure to talk to your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention! A majority of products that treat fleas will also kill ticks and help prevent future infestations. Personally, I pick up a Bravecto chew at my vet every three months, but there are plenty of other options available locally or online. For more information on your different options, check out this list.

Stay safe out there, and as always, I’m keeping a close eye on your pets during visits! 🐶🐱
